UFO cults/sects are groups of people who believe not only that extraterrestrial beings are visiting the Earth and have out best interests at heart, but also that they are worthy of human worship, an activity that is usually coordinated by a single individual. Virtually every serious UFOlogist frowns on such groups, which are (quite rightly) seen as dangerous naïve, and who drag the whole subject of UFOlogy into the nebulous realm of superstition, when it should be regarded as scientific mystery.
Although UFO cultism began in the 1950s, inspired by the claims of contactees, there are still a number of them active in the 2000s, by far the most notorious UFO cult/sect is the Heaven’s Gate sect, headed by the late Marshal Applewhite. On 22nd March 1997, 39 members of the cult committed suicide through poisoning and suffocation, among them Applewhite himself. Apparently, their intention was to leave the Earth behind and rendezvous with a gigantic UFO flying alongside the comet Hale-Bopp. The cult maintained that the crew of this spacecraft existed at the ‘Evolutionary Level’ above humanity.
